Most IT vendors don't understand schools. And most school IT support stops at the help desk.

I started SchoolIT because I kept seeing the same problem across Maine: schools doing their best with technology and no one in the building whose job it is to lead it.

I'm Adam Murray, founder and principal IT director of SchoolIT. Here's who I am and why I built this.

25 Years in Education IT

I've spent 25 years working in education technology, and 15 of them as a tech director for one of the largest school districts in Maine, supporting more than 3,000 users. I've managed the budgets, the infrastructure, the cybersecurity, the device rollouts, the vendor negotiations, and the 7 a.m. phone calls when something breaks before the first bell.

That experience is the foundation of SchoolIT.

The Problem: Many Schools Don't Have a Tech Director

In many small and mid-sized Maine districts, technology is handled by whoever is closest to it, often a computer lab teacher or tech integrator who ends up responsible for everything from Wi-Fi to student data privacy. These people are the first line of defense, and schools will always need them on site. But they shouldn't have to carry strategy, security, and infrastructure alone.

Technology planning, meanwhile, usually lands on the superintendent, who is rarely a technology expert and shouldn't have to be.

Smaller teams also face a knowledge-density problem. When one person holds most of the technical knowledge and they leave, the district loses capacity and institutional memory overnight.

Augmenting Your Team, Not Replacing It

SchoolIT isn't here to replace the people already supporting your school. Your on-site staff know your buildings, your teachers, and your students, and that can't be outsourced. What we add is knowledge and capacity:

  • Backup for your tech staff: a second set of experienced eyes on the hard problems
  • Knowledge continuity: if someone leaves, the playbook, documentation, and context don't walk out the door with them
  • Leadership they can lean on: your tech integrator gets a director-level colleague, and your superintendent gets a trusted advisor

Every School Has the Same Needs. Only the Scale Changes.

Whether you serve 200 students or 5,000, you need:

  • Strategic technology planning and budgeting
  • Reliable networks and infrastructure
  • Cybersecurity and student data protection
  • Device lifecycle management
  • Vendor and contract oversight
  • Responsive, knowledgeable support

SchoolIT brings K12-specific knowledge that no other IT service provider in Maine can offer. We work alongside your on-site team to build capacity, starting with director-level leadership and infrastructure. We aren't a general IT shop that happens to take school clients. We're strategy and support, built exclusively for schools.

What SchoolIT Offers Right Now

Today, SchoolIT provides fractional IT director services for Maine schools and districts, plus on-site support for infrastructure issues like networking, Wi-Fi, and server and device environments.

  • Director-level thinking: long-range planning, budgeting, and technology strategy, not just ticket resolution
  • Infrastructure help on site: when a network or infrastructure problem needs eyes in the building, I'll be there
  • Long-term partnership: continuity, so your district never loses momentum

Most of the work is remote, which keeps it efficient and cost-effective, and I'm happy to meet in person whenever it's needed.

Growing the Team, Starting with Leadership

SchoolIT is building a team to support the full scope of school technology needs. Right now, the focus is IT director-level leadership and infrastructure support, which is where many schools feel the gap most. If you're planning your FY27 budget, this is a good time to lock in a technology leader and grow with us as our services expand.

Let's Talk

Does your school have the technology leadership it needs? Let's find out together.
